Teaching Children of Color through
Culturally Connected Curriculum and Materials

Saturday, January 28, 2012

9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
NYSUT Building, Ray Sampson Room

In this session, materials produced by teachers to center students in the instructional program are presented as demonstrations of teachers as professionals, emancipatory pedagogy, and student experience. These are three of seven constructs for effective teaching in urban schools. Participants will review and discuss the featured student materials as contributors to Rochester Teacher Center’s development as a teaching and learning resource center. NYS Core Learning Standards and RTC Cultural Learning Standards are presented as fundamental to the student materials and their corresponding lessons. Student text to be reviewed are:

The Beautiful People Who Were Stolen

This is a text produced for elementary teachers and their students.  It provides an introduction to the concept and history of the enslavement of African peoples in the Americas.

Mercedes Bermudez, Living the Legacy of Kwnzaa

This student-centered text introduces teachers and their students to a Rochester community elder through her lived experiences and communal orientation.

Teachers will be compensated for their participation and may choose to continue this work as part of an RTC Instructional Practice group. Teachers should register on AVATAR.
